Aaron T. Washington, USN Commander (Retired)

I have been a resident of San Clemente since January 2006. In August of 2017, I retired from the United States Navy after 35 ½ years of honorable service and made San Clemente, my home. I live in the community called “The Coast”. I am supported by my wife Ayako and our son Elijah (18 yrs old).

I currently work for a Tech company called ManTech, as their Deputy Program Manager for the Defense Navy Sector in Chula Vista, CA.  I maintain an active security clearance, with the Department of Defense.

Over the past two years, I have stayed very active and gained valuable experience and knowledge on several city issues.  I serve on the San Clemente Men’s Golf Club Board of Directors (since 2015); served as Commissioner for BPRCA for 11 months, and currently serving as Commissioner for Human Affairs. I also volunteer as a Board Member for San Clemente PierPride.

I was born in Bremerton, Washington (Naval Hospital), and raised in San Diego, California. As soon as I graduated from high school in June of 1982, I enlisted in the United States Navy, two days later, and was off to Basic Training in San Diego. Through the years without breaking service, I obtained my Electrical Journeymen’s certification from the US Department of Labor, in 1992, and completed my bachelor’s degree of science in 2007. I retired at the rank of Commander.

Throughout my years of service, I have participated in several campaigns including Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF). I received several awards during my service and of them all, the two highest awarded were, the Legion of Merit (1) and Meritorious Service Medal (2).

Why am I running? I love our town and our community. My extensive background in leadership, coupled with my technical expertise and experience gained serving on committees and commissions, has prepared me for the next journey of excellence, getting work done for our city.  My tireless drive and unselfish commitment make me a great choice. San Clemente is not a stepping stone for me to a higher office, and I will focus only on local issues.

I am very confident I will do great and work well with others on our council to accomplish positive results.  If the city is looking for an honest and ethical person, that is experienced in working with diverse teams and can get past differences and accomplish the city’s business, then I am your candidate. My platform is: Fully fund Public Safety; Pro-Small-Business-the backbone of America, and not just Delmar street; Oppose Tax Increases putting those on fixed incomes in jeopardy; No-Toll Road; No I-5 Alternative Option; Save our beaches and cliffs affected by wave action and developments; Improve our homeless situation, by working with the neighboring city council, to form an alliance, in which we can go to the county and state unified in our mission to address homelessness; support School Safety, and develop programs that deter our children from using drugs and/or participating in any gangs; and ensure we preserve the history and heritage of our small village by the sea, by restricting developments that take away from this small town feel we all become so accustomed to in our beloved San Clemente.
